Recap
With those basic tools in the box of knowledge and the manual in your hand you should be able to get your combi doing all the things it's supposed to. Before you set off into a wunnerful new world of planing, let's have a recap of the important things to remember:
Sharp - get those cutters sharp and keep 'em that way
Parallel body, skate and fence must all be parallel
Upright keep that plane upright and square to the work
Technique right hand to push, left hand to guide
